Yesterday, I was prompted to install the latest macosX security update on genghis, my work machine (a laptop). Software update crashed in the middle of this. repeatedly. Even after a reboot.

This morning, safari wasn't playing ball, and kept producing keychain errors. So I call the applecare people. They of course can't admit that their own stupid software updater might have fucked my system anally. So, we reboot from the installer CD and repair permissions. Reboot again, into single-user mode (I didn't realise you could do that. Good thing I don't assume my computer is even vaguely secure :/), and run fsck.
Repeatedly. It can't repair a problem with the Catalog (or rather says it has done so, but still finds the same error next time). The bloke on the 'phone seems to think that if you run fsck enough it might magically get better.

But no, magic doesn't work. "well, you'll have to erase the disk, with the "write zeros" option on, and re-install". Fucking great. So instead of doing lots of work today, I'm waiting for my laptop to erase its disk, write zeros all over it, and then to re-install and re-configure macosX and all associated programs.

Well, unless the disk really is fucked, but I doubt that.
