Well, the USB-serial dongle still doesn't work under Macos, but I did get Ubuntu to start talking to the wireless. This is achieved by a script which unloads the 80211 modules as well as the bc43xx module, cps the firmware files into /lib/firmware and /lib/firmware-architecture, loads bc43xx again, ifups the interface, then does iwconfig interface essid='name of our network' after a pause of 4 seconds (some pause seemed critical).

I therefore used this setup to scan my books. I have 577 books (excluding some oddments like yearbooks), of which 54 have no ISBN. I'm not sure if I CBA to put them online in any way.

I have worked around the printer problems. Further testing showed that it would work with any port with a switch in the middle, but not directly. Pursuing a possible auto-negotiation option, I used mii-tool --force to specify 10baseT-FD, and lo! it worked. A bit annoying that 100baseTx-FD no longer works, but 10MBps should do for most purposes...
