...finally got taken to a local MOT-type garage (it was nearby). After sitting around for ages, they had a look at it, and then pointed me at an ill-looking thing and said "needs a new suspension bush, mate", but they don't keep the parts for that sort of thing.

I've rung a chap recommended by someone on cam.transport, who sounds friendly, and asked me to ring him back a bit later today. So, hopefully will be fixed soonish...
