I was phoned by one of those annoying "play a recorded message at you" spammers twice this morning at 7.30am (!) and then at 10.30. So, assuming my housemates don't object, I'm going to sign us up to the TPS (for details, see Paul's excellent article here).

Aha, thanks for the link. Someone phoned here with a text message at 7am today, I didn't realise you could text a non-mobile.

It's a recent innovation.

We've signed up for that at home, but we still get the odd call from Bombay, where the general response to 'We've signed up for the TPS, please don't call us again' is met with blank incomprehension and/or repetition of the (obviously scripted) sales pitch - which, of course, is NEVER a sales pitch, rather a survey asking the question 'are you aware that we are selling such-and-such?'.

It's definitely reduced the volume of those calls, though.

I've fitted a PABX in the house and deal with such calls by putting them on hold and subjecting them to a squarewave synthesised version of some classical piece that I can't identify.

I received one such call earlier today and having shortly afterwards seen this post, decided to sign up for TPS. It seemed to help in my previous residence, but I don't know if covers calls from abroad if not as they may not be covered by the same legislation.
