So, there's been an incident in London. Bit early to tell, but possibly some explosive devices. This reminds me not a little of the IRAs antics in London during my youth (I was quite close to the Bishopsgate bomb, for example). OK, no warning and apparantly several small devices rather than one big one, but never mind.

What I predict is going to happen is that there will be "London's 9/11" remarks made, and our civil liberties will be swallowed up "to keep us safe". Blair is due to make a statement later on, as will Charles Clark. A perfect opportunity to push the ID cards agenda, despite the fact that the purpetrators in all likelyhood are perfectly entitled to be in the UK, and don't have false ID. It's happened just after we were awarded the Olympics, too, so very conveniently timed.

If all that happens, then the "terrorists" have won.

I don't mean to be unsympathetic to those caught up in the chaos. I just wanted to say something before all the knees jerk.

Yep. Don't blame you for wanting to say that.

There's a community: [livejournal.com profile] 070705 that may be helpful.

I think the timing is more likely to do with today being the first day of the G8 summit than the Olympics, not only because the Olympics isn't terribly political, but because the summit dates have been known for ages and the Olympic decision was only announced yesterday.

Are you sure "if we end up with ID cards the terrorists have won" isn't a knee jerk?

Well, it is G8 today, but then why go for London when all the big targets are in Edinburgh? I suppose one could be counting on lower police numbers elsewhere.

As to the latter, it's been my view for a while that the Govt is keen on using a terrorist threat, real or otherwise to force through it's own anti-civil-liberties agenda.

The "big targets" in Edinburgh are guarded not only by lots of police but by exceptionally paranoid police.

Choice of target is also going to depend an awful lot on your motivation for an attack. "Terrorism" (in the West, at any rate) isn't in general about political decapitation, since that will do nothing to remove the institutional structures which are the ultimate enemy. A soft underbelly will be a much more tempting target.

Your view is shared by many, but an elected government successfully pushing through its agenda is hardly equivalent to "the terrorists have won".

Police from around the country, including the Met, have been drafted in to help police the G8. London might have been left weak.

1,500 Met in Scotland, 31,500 still in London according to their PR person.

People have been saying much the same for some time; I think a knee jerk would have to be a new reaction, not an existing one.

Seconded.

Bye bye civil liberties, you were kinda neat.

My kneejerk reaction was a rant about the mindset that decides that slaughtering a random bunch of innocent people going about their lives because they stand for something one hates or to achieve political objectives is the way to go, on whichever side of the spectrum; it doesn't get any better whichever side does it. Gandhi and MLK must be spinning in their graves :(
