I note in passing This HoMM-alike. Anyone know if it's any good? certainly most of the free games I've tried have been not actually worth much playing...

It's in Debian, and it's not really very HoMM-like. It's fun, but the difficulty curve is an utter bitch :(
(There's another game in Debian that's rather more HoMM-like, but I can't remember its name right now.)
