My host-naming scheme has, for some time, been autocrats. When I got a work laptop, and was told that .vet puns weren't allowed, I opted for genghis, for fairly obvious reasons. Genghis has died, and a new machine (well, OK, same old machine, with new disk) will be arriving, hopefully, in about a week. I'm thinking about what to call it - Ögedei was the immediate successor to Genghis Kahn, but sucked somewhat (and I can't sensibly have Ö in a hostname); Kublai was the first successor who was any use, really (and was Genghis' grandson). So, a poll - what should I call the machine when it returns? If you think one option is the best one, but should be spelt differently, please vote for that option, and explain in a comment why my spelling is wrong!

[Poll #617940]

Of course, that was just the first thing I thought of. That makes me either of limited imagination or a genius ;) The trouble with all my suggestions is that they can't easily be extended if Emp gets *another* computer. Unless you go "Genghis", "Khan", "Wrath".

OK, let's try for a potentially extendable and more obscure reference: Harlequin.

As in Gabriel Prosser, the slave-leader? Or is this some other reference I'm missing? SNB

I've seen the film, but not read the books (yes, you can all laugh at my lack of SF-cred now).

Can Ögodai be transliterated in any way? Oegodai or something? Of course, games with spelling are bad in hsot names.

A name should continue to be attached to a role rather than a physical machine if the machine in that role is changed due to the old machine going out of commission. Hence my laptop is still chess even though it is now an iBook not a ThinkPad.

I've always flouted this rule for machines I don't expect other people to be logging in to, and I can't see myself changing now ;)

Yes. Assuming it's not actually effectively a 'role machinename' my rule of thumb is that if it's got the same filesystem it's the same machine. If you have to reinstall from scratch then it's probably not.
