The postgrad vets went 10-pin bowling this evening, so I decided to join them, even though I've only been a couple of times before, and that was ~10 years ago. I arrived, and hung around a bit. Just as I was about to give up on it as a lost cause, some people (including the organiser) arrived. We waited a little longer for other people to turn up - there were about 3 people who had pulled out today, and another couple we were expecting (who never turned up); then the five of us (2 vet postgrads, and three friends) went and booked a lane, to be told we'd have to wait another 70 minutes. So, we went to the bar, had a drink, and then went to play pool. A little suprisingly, I won convincingly, at least partly by cleaning up my last 3 balls and the black in one go.
As it turned out, this would rather set the tone for the evening. In the first game, I scored 148 (including 3 strikes on the trot), winning by a margin of 60 or so. The second game was less good, but I still managed a couple of strikes, and finished on 118, a good 20 points clear of the field. Given I can't remember getting more than about 80 before, I'm dead chuffed by that. No-one will believe me when I say I'm rubbish at 10-pin bowling in the future :)
Someone pointed out afterwards that I bowled faster than anyone else - the girls were about 8.5 mph, the other two blokes 10-12mph, and I was running at around 16.5 mph. Maybe hitting the pins hard makes up for lack of finesse ;-)
