I said two weeks. That's two weeks until the machine is working again, not two weeks until they start doing something about it.

Obviously, it would be horribly inconvenient to go two weeks without a washing machine, but equally a repair could realistically take that long if parts needed ordering, in which case there's not a lot that could be done about it.

Well, I often go two weeks without a washing machine because I'm busy and have lots of clothes :) But that makes it a month when it breaks at the worst possible moment, and I can't wash my party clothes when I need them either.

Hand wash! I do this for my delicates* anyway, though, so I'm used to it.

* not a euphemism.

Well, yes. I guess my sense of "unacceptable faff" is distorted because I'm rarely at home for half an hour at once in the two days before a party :) But I handwahsed sometimes at college.

I would consider 2 weeks acceptable if they said in the first instance that this was the earliest they could manage, and preferably offered you the option of getting somebody in yourself sooner and sending them the invoice.

I would definitely consider 1 week an acceptable delay, given that often it can take that long to get an engineer in if you're calling them yourself without any faffing intermediaries!

Mind you, I may just have low expectations. One agency we rented with took over a week to fix the back door which wouldn't actually lock...

I said 1 week. I would think longer could be acceptable in certain circumstances... However I wouldn't include "being a muppet" as acceptable criteria for taking longer!

I phoned the letting agent this morning to say I needed a plumber for the washing machine (which is flooding the electrics with flowback from the drainage pipe). Apparently she's been phoning plumbers all day and everyone's booked up until Christmas. IRMFI.
