I'm off to Vancouver for a conference. There are plausible flights with BA and Air Canada. I've not flown long-haul with either before, and I figure some of my fiends might have, so...

From a very small sample of flights, BA was a slightly more pleasant experience. Comfort/entertainment-wise, however, I suspect it's much more to do with the make of plane rather than the airline. (I suspect also the Air Canada flight I didn't enjoy was generally for reasons which weren't their fault, e.g. it being an overnight flight)

BA long-haul economy is reasonable, but I suspect Air Canada will be a cookie-cutter equivalent, so no real difference there. However, if you want to scam some miles, you are probably better (a) flying Air Canada, and (b) enrolling in a Star Alliance programme. BA's mileage rates for discount economy flights are abysmal.

I've found flying BA (to Cyprus, mainly) just better in general, and long-haul in particular (Bangkok to London, a lot nicer than flights to SE Asia with other airlines, although KLM to Jakarta was bloody nice).

Or, you could take whichever allows for a free 2-day layover in Boston and see the city.

I've had flights with BA that were a pleasure, and flights with BA that were horrible. I haven't had enough flights with Air Canada to have a reasonable sample, but I can't see it being all that much different. The important thing is to avoid changing planes in the US unless you really want to go through an extra set of customs, entry regs and fingerprinting.

It's been years since I flew to Vancouver. I remember the outbound Air Canada flight as I was trapped in the middle of a long row of seats for 11 hours with no in-flight entertainment (Very cheap student ticket that involved landing at Calgary and waiting in the plane before taking off again). The subsequent flights back and forth with BA haven't stuck in my mind so I assume were a lot more comfortable.
