Today has largely been spent restoring the state of the house after yesterday's searching.
Also, I discovered why my windoze box misbehaved - one of the fans is buggered:

I think that's the Northbridge, and that getting replacement fans with the right connector will be almost impossible (oh, and that the motherboard may be fried anyway).
So, not a great day, really. Still, I had a pleasant evening with
atreic, and my parents are visiting tomorrow (after the
tienelle-
chess wedding) to buy me lunch, and go punting.

It should be possible if you can get a fan that will physically fit to change the connectors over, or change the wires and connectors over; at bit of creative poking and prodding should do the connector, a bit of creative soldering should do the whole thing. Worth trying, as I'm sure you don't want to rebuild a Windoze box if you don't have to.

Looks like a standard two-pin 0.1" pitch connector to me. Even if it doesn't have the right connector you can still probably push it onto the motherboard - if it has a third wire that isn't in the middle just ignore that (making sure red/black are the right way round so the fan blows the right way!).
Those aren't small wires: 100 pins 0.5mm between each one is small :-) Wave it in my direction if you want anything soldering (next week though).

Though I must admit, there aren't any obvious screw-holes, so I'm not quite sure how this one was held on in the first place!

Give my love to Nick and Chessypig, too...
