I have decided that I would like to ride a Dawes Super Galaxy. My fiendly bike-shop person thinks that the 55cm frame is probably what I want. He didn't really want to order one in, though, as if it didn't suit me, he'd be stuck trying to sell it. So, I called round all the Dawes stockists in town. As I noted at the time, there wasn't much luck. Since then, I've been calling the one place that usually stocks the SG, who have kept saying "no, it's not in stock yet", for the last month or so.

Today I emailed Dawes to see if they could assist, concluding my email with "Can you help me spend money on your products? :-)". Their reply was, roughly, "no". They won't offer sale or return to their dealers, so I'm stuck trying to find one with it in stock. :(

That is very irritating of them! And of the bike shops for not stocking it.

It looks like I'll have to; I really do want to take one for a spin, then go away and think about it before buying one. I'm disappointed no-one wants to make this easy for me.

Where were you asking. If in cambridge, normally Ben Haywoods is a good shop, the others are rather crap. Dawes are hard to get hold of, I had to wait for about 8 weeks for the one I ordered in a given size to actually arrive at my bike shop.

I also had to buy untried, and go from south london to Forest Row in Sussex, as they were about the only place I could find who could order it in for me.

As it turned out, because I got the smallest frame and have longer legs than trunk (and am a girl!) my Dawes Audax is a bit long along the top tube for me, so I had to spend quite a bit on changing bars and stem to get it to fit better.

Try uk.rec.cycles to see if there are recommendations of other places in the area that may stock, or you may find someone there who has a 55cm SG who will let you try it for size.

I've tried just about every Dawes stockist in Cambridgeshire :-/

Ordering one in isn't so much of a problem - the problem is I'm being implausibly over-picky and wanting to try the blasted thing before spending £1000 on it!

Er, that should have been uk.rec.cycling.

Can they not at least tell you to where they have recently sold a suitable bicycle, so you know what dealer might have one?

Frankly at this point I would be strongly inclined towards the "find another manufacturer" approach. (If you're sufficiently pro-Dawes that you don't want to do that then you might as well buy it unseen anyway :-))
