I can't make
atreic's camera focus sensibly, so these are woeful pictures, but I think they give you an idea of what's happened. Images here, here, and here. I think the last shows the failure best.

In any respect, it looks like the chain's broken - did it come off into the spokes, or did the rear deraillieur end up in the spokes?
Either way, it suggests bike had a fault bit, or wasn't properly adjusted/set up, or possibly had taken a knock to the rear hanger which skewed it out of alignment (they are easy to bang).
What were you doing when it went 'ptwang'?
