Note - look at the ETA pictures first!

I can't make [livejournal.com profile] atreic's camera focus sensibly, so these are woeful pictures, but I think they give you an idea of what's happened. Images here, here, and here. I think the last shows the failure best.

I might try and borrow a slightly better-suited digicam.

ETA: [livejournal.com profile] atreic pointed out the "flower-mode" switch on the front, which has improved things a bit: better pictures are now up here, here, and here.

So what happens now? Is it covered by useful warranty?

This looks very much like it falls under the sale of goods act: "As described; fit for purpose; free from defects". It is obviously not "free from defects", so you should be entitled to your money back, a free replacement or a free repair; your choice.

I can't even begin to see what's happened there - a shot from the side, but a bit further out, would be useful.

In any respect, it looks like the chain's broken - did it come off into the spokes, or did the rear deraillieur end up in the spokes?

Either way, it suggests bike had a fault bit, or wasn't properly adjusted/set up, or possibly had taken a knock to the rear hanger which skewed it out of alignment (they are easy to bang).

What were you doing when it went 'ptwang'?
