Some of you know Edinburgh fairly well, it seems, so I'm going to ask for a little advice. On tuesday, I need to get to The Ashworth Laboratories, and on Monday I'll be arriving by train. Any good B+Bs to stay in? Any to avoid?

Failing that, other hints like "avoid anywhere near the station" appreciated - I've never been to Edinburgh before...

There are some decent B&Bs round about the Pilrig Street area, which is near enough to the station and not too bad a place. I stayed in this one back in July for a weekend and it was most excellent. Also, there are some cheaper ones round our neck of the woods in Corstorphine, but that's a wee bus ride into town. If you're willing to go self-catering, I heartily endorse The Top Flat in the Grassmarket, which is very near where you need to be and is most comfortable.

Oh, and if you need a destressing drink while you're here and have spare time, let me know. :)

Likewise to [livejournal.com profile] uisgebeatha, I'm available for drinks, and local colour.

Edinburgh has zillions of B&Bs all over the place. I haven't actually stayed in any of them so can't recommend but - as with any Big Smoke - the price increases the closer you get to the centre, sometimes drastically so. If you're prepared to walk a wee bit you should be able to keep a good lid on your costs. (Come to think of it, Edin's buses aren't as bad as Stageroach.)

On the other hand, staying out nearer KB might be an idea, depending on when the interview is. Lothian might be better than StageRoach, but I'd not want to rely on them in a tight spot.

I strongly recommend the Rowan B&B on Glenorchy Terrace. It's where we got rooms for Ash's mum, brother and sister-in-law when they came over for the wedding - have also used it successfully for clients of mine. It's about 600m north of where you're heading (ten minutes' walk if that) and there are buses leaving nearby which will get you straight to the city centre. Their number's 0131 667 2463 - postcode EH9 2DQ if you want to check the location. You can get a bus from just outside the train station that'll take you to within a minute's walk of it.

This post was brought to my attention by cobalt_skye, and she thought I could help.

Living in Edinburgh myself whilst not in Cambridge, I would suggest the places on "Craigmiller Park" and "Minto Street" as the prices are a bti otu of town so cheaper.

Buses in Edinburgh are mainly operated by LRT (lothian regional transport) and tend to be red, or red and white. The service is £1 for a trip, or £2.30 for all day pass. The bus service to most outlying parts are every 10 mins for most of the day and near the centre going inwards they are usually more frequent.

I don't know if there is a bus from here to the Kings Buildings site, however it is about 20 mins into town at most, and pretty much all buses go from the centre of town to thier destination. The town direction from these streets is up hill and out of town is down hill.

Hope this helps

And also, would you like to meet up for tea / drinks / nattering etc.? We could do Monday evening, or Tuesday between 5 and 7 (choir rehearsal at 7, Ash works 1-5).
