You might be right, and I think "the current regime is clearly doing a lot of time, so we should try something else" is a pretty strong case". OTOH, personally, I think the illegality of pot is one of the main reasons I've never tried it (along with the fact that it's usually offered to me when alight, and I don't smoke).

Here's a question for you, then. When have you knowingly broken the law? Do you do so on a regular basis?

I have occasionally driven faster than is legal; I don't believe I break the law on a regular basis.

The true, but uninteresting in this case, answer is that I was young and foolish. I now think that drinking beer in pubs at 16 was something I probably shouldn't have done. At the time, I think I thought that the law was stupid, and that I wasn't going to harm anyone by my actions.

Why do you think that you probably shouldn't have done it? Because it was illegal? That changes seems strange to me, despite the fact that I would never have dreamt of drinking in pubs before I was 18.*

*But then again I was 22 before I did so anyway. I just didn't like alcohol enough before then though I would drink wine with meals and cider at home from some point.
