I think you are very right :) but I also think religion is often used, quite unthinkingly, to justify views that are not necessarily an integral part of that religion, but which seem as though they are an integral part of it because everyone assumes they are. So, not spurious, but still wrong.

As far as I can tell, the agencies have less of a problem with people of other faiths: "we welcome enquiries from people of any or no faith"

What is more important in marriage to a christian - the fact that it is a man and a woman, or the fact that they are married before God? How can the former possibly be more important than the latter to a religious body?

The Catholic church recognises the marriages of non-Catholics as valid, provided they complied with the law of the country where the marriage took place.
