"new" is perhaps a misnomer, but I've not posted about this one before. It's now getting to the point where I'm encountering new things, which seems a good point to mention it here just before it dies messily.

Currently, it's on score 279,280 after 2,078,608 turns. My previous character, which was quite divey (until an unfortunate interaction with an Ancient Gold Dragon). At a similar point, that was on score 215,150 after 2,273,664, which I think means I'm gettinb better :-)

I just posted to r.g.r.a some equipment queries, which I'll reproduce under the cut, along with a character-dump

I could swap in Narthanc for 4 blows/round (not that I melee very often) and the occasional fire bolt; if I did that, I'd probably want the amulet of regeneration (I assume there's no gain to wearing it whilst using the (Defender)?)

I could swap in one of the other Elvenkind Armours - Confusion is a PITA for spell-casters, although I haven't yet seen much in the way of Nether attacks (but maybe keep that for later?); in that case I'd need the Westernesse weapon for free action (or to swap in the ring of free action).

Are there any other things I should be looking to pick up soon?

I'm hopeless at Angband. I haven't quite learnt how to manage the inventory sufficiently well yet. ( I have lots of other problems, but that's the biggest.)

What problems do you have with it? I mostly play mages, but I don't find inventory issues a big problem.

I usually find I have too much stuff. Particularly, too much unidentified stuff. I may be too much of a nethack packrat.

If you're a warrior-type, you get plausible pseudo-ID for weapons and armour. Potions and scrolls I ID by selling them if I can't afford identify scrolls (or drinking them in extremis) - ones you find early on are not usually that hazardous. It's irritating when your first-level character sells off something especially good, but that doesn't happen often.

Also, things dropped by uniques are worth paying for identify scrolls for, generally.

Thanks. I shall see what happens.

(Probably, I'll die.)

Oh, and never, ever, under any circumstances, ever, allow yourself to be slowed by your inventory. Even slow (-1) can be fatal.

Also, there's a world of difference between Fast (+10) and Fast (+9) - or for that matter Fast (+11). Being able to go at exactly twice the speed of the enemies lets you do the attack-step back-attack-step back-and so on. This is especially useful against some uniques where a speed potion makes the difference between killing the unique and being killed by it.

I personally find warrior-type easy mode - you're much more robust, don't have to worry about MP, and can do good damage from the start if you roll a high str and dex character, then buy a whip or dagger (main gauche is better if you can afford it).

The pseudo-ID is actually very good, you get an indication ranging through:
terrible-(awful?)-bad-average-good-excellent-special
excellent being westernesse, elvenkind etc and special being artifacts.

Unfortunately (although, NB, opinions vary wildly on Angband) identifying three million items to find the two dozen you can sell and the one useful one is pretty much what the game is about. Over and over. Might as well play WoW if you want to grind endlessly...

I'm currently finding that WoW is actually much less grindy than Angband, to the point where there are times in WoW where I'm actually worried about how fast I'm leveling up. At the lower levels there's a danger that you'll get too high level for some of the dungeons you want to go in before you've actually done them with a competent group. Plus in Angband there's a danger of losing weeks of effort due to dying of boredom (i.e. getting fed up with doing things the slow way, diving for a bit, and then getting killed by a dangerous unique).

That said, I've never got an Angband character much past level 30 (out of 50) or a WoW character much past level 40 (out of 70), and I hear that the WoW endgame is very grindy indeed.

I've found angband much less grindy now I'm playing a more divey character.

How does a hammer of Westernesse enable you to slay, "orcs, trolls, and giants?"

I think "inspired by Tolkien" might be over-stating the case as far as Angband is concerned...
