So, I booted into Ubuntu, and tried lsusb -v, which reported 0x067b and 0x2303.

Which is, incidentally, what my one of these devices says under Fedora. Makes sense really given that the chip is called PL2303. 0x0557 seems to be ATEN which is another compatible device although I've no idea why one device could have two completely different identifiers.

That creates two /dev entries, neither of which does much of use. the /dev/tty.PL[thingy] AFAICT doesn't open usefully, and the /dev/cu.PL[thingy] is similarly not-very-good (returns an error, or splurges garbage over the screen, depending on what you try and open it with).

Thankfully, I've managed to get ubuntu talking to the wireless, so I think that's going to be the way to go.
