I believe it to be the 'Corpus Christie Clock'; the chronophage is only the little critter on top, not the whole clock.

Right. However I prefer to call the whole thing the Chronophage, since it's a distinctive name for a distinctive clock, and Corpus has more than one clock.

Yes, that is also my answer.

Its name may be The Chronophage, but clearly it is sometimes called The Corpus Clock by some people.

I thought that the whole thing was dubbed the Chronophage, although I can understand that the name may only apply to the nomnomnom-ing insect. In which case, I suppose it may be the Corpus Clock? Hmmm....

"That bloody annoying thing on the corner which causes massive pedestrian jams whenever I'm trying to get a sandwich" or "because Cambridge really needed another tourist magnet" usually.

Speaking as a Corpuscle it's either "the college clock thingummy" or "the only newsworthy event to have happened at Corpus in a century (or more)".

FWIW, the official answer, as in what CU press releases have have said, seems to be the "The Corpus Clock", the Chronophage referring to the creature only. However, "The chronophage clock" is probably the nameyest name, since it defines the clock most precisely.

I'm happy with any of the names on offer, however I picked "chonophage" as I think I've heard and said that slightly more often.

PS. www.corpusclock.co.uk, despite being somewhat pretty, has managed one of the most annoying innovations in web design I've seen. If you right click, it pops up a dialog box telling you not to do so twice consecutively.

I have half a mind to disable javascript, copy something, and send back to the webmaster with a snotty email questioning their competence whenever I encounter something like that.

I daren't gainsay an army of people who really care:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chronophage

"Corpus Clock" it is, then. :)

Chronophage is just a really cool word, so deserves to be used even if it isn't quite the correct name.

Is there an analogy to Big Ben here? The more interesting name (chronophage / Big Ben) is often used to mean the whole thing (entire clock / or clock and tower kaboodle) but technically only refers to a particular bit of it (chomping thing / bell).

This sounds about right to me.

"actually, I quite liked it"

More particularly, it fairly clearly gives quite a lot of pleasure to people, if you stand and watch the watchers for a bit ...

And so, I refer to the whole thing as "the chronophage". It does. 8-)
