I'm sort of in a similar position, considering buying a car for the first time and not entirely sure of how to go about it. You mention Parkers; I've found their reviews informative, as are the Channel 4 car reviews. They have a Best in Class section, the class you're describing seems to be large family car, where they recommend the Mondeo, the Vauxhall Vectra and the Honda Accord; for some reason they recommend the Volkswagen Passat as a new car in that area, but not used.

What I want out of a car seems to be sufficiently different to what Jeremy Clarkson considers important that I don't pay a lot of attention to him.
