Oh, could you expand on that please? I mean, what is potentially wrong with the cold water from mixer taps? Would your answer be the same for somewhere with no loft water tanks? (At my parents' house I was accustomed to only getting drinking-water from the kitchen tap, but my husband has persuaded me that as our house doesn't have a loft tank then the cold water would be fine from any tap. We do have mainly mixer taps though.)

Well, firstly, I'm not happy drinking household hot water, because it sits for several days in a warm dirty tank. I gather that with modern condenser boilers the hot water is actually heated on demand: on the one hand this apparently gives a pretty poor flow rate compared with a conventional hot water tank, on the other it's as clean and fresh as mains cold water.

As for mixer taps, firstly, how can I tell the mixer genuinely gives me just cold water if I push it as far as it can travel in the cold direction? Secondly, there's always a lag between adjusting the temperature and the water that emerges; how do I know how long to wait before treating the water as cold?
