If you might want to travel to the USA in the next 2 years, then you should get/renew an ESTA before 9 September, when a £9 charge to encourage tourism will be introduced.

You can get an ESTA here (beware of commercial websites trying to make money out of you, and only go via the .gov site).

Thanks for the heads-up - I'm going in November, so I'll make sure to get that sorted this month!

Something that confuses me is that I have completed the ESTA stuff online twice in the last 18 months (I got a new passport and thought it best to renew the ESTA), but AIUI, they are valid for 2 years and nobody has yet to ask me to show anything. As they ask for address for first night of stay, how can you apply for one before booking a trip and is it valid for multiple trips?

As for the £9 charge, they can stuff that!

You don't have to give the flight/address/etc details for the ESTA (only for the paperwork they give you on the 'plane). An ESTA lasts for 2 years (but you can apply for a new one whenever you like, currently).

They are finally doing away with the green forms, so are they going to make a new one for address info?

Oddly the Waitrose here that stocks it had a case on the shelf that had had the neck wrapping applied without the crown caps being on the bottles. So I've been chary about buying it since.

Hang on, to encourage tourism? I don't think they're using the same dictionary as me!

Ah, thanks for the reminder. The first time I read about that I wasn't planning on going to the US, but now I am and can't remember how long ago I filled one in.
