I find that the language seems more interesting once you are in the live environment. I couldnt imagine successfully motivating myself to study beforehand, but once you can try out new phrases and look for familar words in newspapers and overheard concersations, it begins to be interesting for its own sake.
Having said that, probably pretty poitnless in the long term - I am probably starting work in a francophone country in this job, so what about all that Chinese and Spanish and Swahili I was making lots of effort with?
