I have a longer post I want to make to LJ, but that will probably have to wait for the DDoS to abate.

Given that DDoSes are bad, and things I don't want to encourage, I'd like to suggest people don't migrate to DW right now - that, to me, would be to be seen to be supporting the DDoSers.

This is more or less my feeling on the matter too. To knock LJ for not coping with a DDoS, when a well co-ordinated attack can easily take out Google, Twitter or Facebook, just seems like poor sportsmanship.

I agree, I have several things I want to post but they'll just have to wait.

Yes, quite. I can see it's reasonable if someone has decided to move to DW but haven't got round to it for this to be the natural reaction but statistically it just wouldn't look good.

Having said that they could be dealing with communication a bit better - status page is still just is under heavy load and the first attack it was technical difficulties with nothing further for several hours IIRC.

*nods* I'd be far happier if they kept that info up to date. Every time I looked at the status page I was wrong (positively or negatively).

I'm not moving to Dreamwidth because of the DDoS. But I had a sudden fit of huge paranoia along the lines of 'argh, no LJ back ups, what if the whole thing Died' so I used dreamwidth to back up.

Very wise. Having just lost all my photos and the LSM photos site due to the death of fotopic, I'm feeling rather twitchy about such matters.

Exactly my feeling. Except for the bit where I never got around to backing up to DW because it was complicated and time-consuming and there was a big glut of LJers doing the same thing. Argh.

I thought it was complicated, but actually it's click on about two things, and then give your LJ password to DW. It took a long time, but didn't need me to be there for that.

[If you need help finding the two things, I'll comment once I have access to DW - work blocks it]

Oh, yes please. That would be useful. I can do it overnight or something. Does it import f-lock settings etc.? That might be one of the procrastinatory factors, as I have quite a lot of sensitive family stuff at some points in time.

You go to your dreamwidth, and on the home page is an organise button.

That leads to an 'import content' button.

and from there it's really straight forward. Mine took about 7 hours for all posts and comments

It imports friendslock settings, and you can tell it to import any custom groups for filters etc, and it appears to have got them all right on mine (or at least I haven't had any unexpected drama today).

Note, if I have a filter that is Emp and you, it imports that as an open ID log in for Emp and you's LJ accounts, and doesn't automatically add Emp and you's dreamwidth accounts. Which is really really sensible as Emperor on DW might be the wrong Emperor, but confused me a bit.

Yes, I think this is very sensible. I agree that it's wrong-headed to be cross at LJ about this, but also think it is wise to look at other options for backup, Just In Case.

Agreed, though, if as some have said, the Russian state intends that LJ ceasees to exist, they probably have the means to ensure that.

Dreamwidth have also suggested that people hold off importing their journals from LJ as that just adds to the load on LJ's servers.

Hmmm. I'm not sure. I mean, I don't blame LJ for this, I wouldn't move away to punish them. (And I support people saying that importing your journal now would just make things worse for them, which isn't fair, although I'd also support people who want to make decent back-ups, even now.)

But on the other hand, LJ have made it clear they don't care for my goodwill and they don't care for my patronage[1]. So I'm not sure how much bother I'd want to go through to support them.

I mean, I don't want to support the idea that DDOS attacks are effective. But I also feel like maybe the victim can draw their support from people who care about them, rather than people that don't... But I'm not sure if that's consistent or not.

[1] Insofar as I use their site, and look at their ads, but don't currently pay them anything.

That's a good suggestion.

I have a dreamwidth account, set up during a previous crisis - I must back up into it when things go back to normal!
