This is a detective story with occult elements, at least noir-adjacent. A magical detective discovers that a murder case is more sinister than it first appears, and that powerful occult players are at work. Plus it's 1940s Chicago, so they have to keep aspects of their private life hidden.

This is a pacy story with some well-drawn characters, and a nicely twisty plot. The ending works nicely unless you stop and think about it too much.

OK so I've watched too much Buffy, but this whole business of dragging people back out of heaven doesn't seem to impact on Helen as much as it might - she's shocked that her brother isn't more grateful for her bringing him back to life, and even when it's suggested that's because he was in heaven, she doesn't even pause to think if her girlfriend would want to be brought back from there? And the selfishness of this act is pretty rapidly glossed over in favour of a "how romantic" sort of ending.
