Having reflected further upon my previous entry, I conclude that if we'd started reading one OED entry a day when the Fourth Crusade started, then we'd be finishing about now.

The fact that the OED hadn't been started then is incidental

As, presumably, is the fact that most of the words in it hadn't entered the language by that point :-)
