The rear-view mirror fell off on the way out tonight, as [livejournal.com profile] claroscuro was adjusting it prior to getting some more driving practice. It appears to have been held on with glue, but we're not quite sure what to do about this. So...

Is it actually illegal to drive without a rear-view mirror? Vans with opaque rear doors have to manage with just their wing mirrors, so if those aren't illegal then it's hard to imagine why an ordinary car with the same visibility would be more dangerous...

I'd certainly go for "ask a garage first", though.

It's illegal to drive without two of wing mirrors and rear-view mirror, so so long as you have both wing mirrors, that's fine.

I'd stick it back on with one of those ultra-strong sticky tabs.

Stick it back on with congealed hamster blood!

Places like Halfords sell glue which is intended for sticking rear-view mirrors to windscreens. Don't use superglue.

Tickybox the damm thing until it stays put. That ought to fix things.

This happened to me a couple of months ago.

Short answer is, normal glue doesn't do the job, but you can get some heat-activated sticky stuff to hold it on. Garage will no doubt do it for you, but you can probably buy the patch in a random suitable shop.

I'm not quite sure how much heat you need - it wasn't an issue for us, having portable gas blowlamps, et al, but I *think* I remember a hairdrier being enough.

My mother was test-driving a car once when the rear-view mirror came off in her hand as she was trying to adjust it whilst driving along towards a roundabout... that was fun.
