This link is to a BBC story on a covert investigation by the *ahem* open-minded BUAV into animal experimentation at Cambridge University.

This research is into Parkinson's and other neuro-degenerative disorders; without it there is precious little hope of a cure for these diseases.

I have looked round the primate building (I can't say where it is exactly, for obvious reasons). I have seen the marmosets (and other experimental animals), and the conditions in which they are kept. I know at least in outline what experimental procedures are carried out.

This report (or what of it is available) is a pack of false anthropomorphisms, distortions of scientific procedures and misinformation. Yes, the marmosets have lesions made in their brains, but under GA, and there is analgesia provided. I have seen them post-surgey, and they generally seemed well, adn responsive to people (and marshmallows). The video clips seem to me to mostly be normal marmoset behaviour (there's one that looks to be a post-op recovery). The technicians are all extremely skilled, and there is an NVS and 4-times a year unannounced inspection by the Home Office.

Of course, the University and Home Office will investigate the allegations, but of course now we'll be having demonstractions (and probably threatening behaviour) round the vet school :(

Nah, the threatening behavior won't be around the vet school, it'll be where I'm trying to take exams next week... obviously...

Not convinced - they already demo outside physiology and suchlike. Previously, there's not been much idea in the anti-vivesection camp that animal expts go on on the West Cambridge site...

Precisely. They regularly protest on Downing St. I have exams in physiology, exams in Anatomy... If they lock the gates and doors down as they usually do, it's going to make getting to those exams rather interesting.

Oh sheesh, Matthew. IKWYM, BTDT etc.

*hug*

You know how often I've seen standards of animal welfare _deteriorate_ after this sort of nonsense, since your bunny-hugger type doesn't like the sight of blood.

At one of my previous environments we had to change the small-mammal killing procedure, from knocking them hard on the head to asphyxiating them with CO_2_. as a result of that sort of thing. The whole thing made me ill.

*shrug*

Maybe that's why I now pay the mortgage by developing software. (Naah, it isn't, but it's a part of the Great Disillusionment I had)

Weel, Tony has pledged his support for science. Still, not many people worry about fruit flies.
