This link is to a BBC story on a covert investigation by the *ahem* open-minded BUAV into animal experimentation at Cambridge University.

This research is into Parkinson's and other neuro-degenerative disorders; without it there is precious little hope of a cure for these diseases.

I have looked round the primate building (I can't say where it is exactly, for obvious reasons). I have seen the marmosets (and other experimental animals), and the conditions in which they are kept. I know at least in outline what experimental procedures are carried out.

This report (or what of it is available) is a pack of false anthropomorphisms, distortions of scientific procedures and misinformation. Yes, the marmosets have lesions made in their brains, but under GA, and there is analgesia provided. I have seen them post-surgey, and they generally seemed well, adn responsive to people (and marshmallows). The video clips seem to me to mostly be normal marmoset behaviour (there's one that looks to be a post-op recovery). The technicians are all extremely skilled, and there is an NVS and 4-times a year unannounced inspection by the Home Office.

Of course, the University and Home Office will investigate the allegations, but of course now we'll be having demonstractions (and probably threatening behaviour) round the vet school :(
