A fiend gave [livejournal.com profile] atreic and I a two-month free trial with lovefilm. Today, I cancelled that free trial (like all such things, they start charging you at the end of the trial period), so thought I might make a brief note about what we watched in those two months:

Batman Begins (cheesy tat, but fun)
The Bourne Identity (I liked this - a tense, pacy thriller)
The Bourne Supremacy (Less good than the previous)
The Da Vinci Code (Less time wasted than reading the book would have been...)
Full Metal Jacket (A good, if bleak, film. I'm sure drill sargeants everywhere loathe it :)
Kill Bill - Vol. 1 (Very Tarantino - stylish, violent, blackly funny in places)
Kill Bill - Vol. 2 (Also good, actually)
Pan's Labyrinth (An odd little film, this. A classic fairy-tale of a film)
Pirates of the Caribbean - Dead Man's Chest (Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!)
Platoon (Another cheery Vietnam film, with some now-classic images in)
The Wicker Man [original version] (This is now less scary than it was then, I think; perhaps because the inspectors Christian zeal is no longer so sympathetic?)

We also got a couple of PS2 games - Burnout 3: Takedown (which I loved, and so bought on ebay) and Resident Evil 4 (which was good, but Too Damned Hard).

The service was, on the whole, pretty good - there always seemed to be an extra working day in the round-trip if it was near a weekend, which was slightly irritating, but generally the turnaround was fast, and they were fine about the one disk they sent that was cracked. I'd happily recommend them to people; we just decided that we didn't want the outlay on an ongoing basis.

I was a bit annoyed that the cancellation process involved going through 4 web-pages, but I guess that's to be expected.

That's interesting. (And an insightful present, it might or might not work, but it's bound to be a bit useful.) I was just giving Amazon rental a go in the other browser window, did you consider not cancelling?

We had pretty much decided in advance that we'd only go for the free trial; we were very tempted to carry on, but decided we didn't want another regular outlay.

I was thinking about doing the five free rentals and we give you a tenner lovefilm deal, but decided that I didn't want a tenner that badly...

I've been with them for quite a while and apart from the weekend wait (even longer over BH weekends but you can work around it if you time it right), the service is pretty good. You do wait a long time for brand new releases, though, even if you put them in high priority.
I have the 3 disc at a time option and pay 6 months in advance which gives you another discount so I'm down to about £1 per DVD.
I mainly use it for films I simply want to see once (because I missed them at the cinema or loved them when I originally saw them) but am not sure about if it's worth buying the whole DVD for. As I have very little space for DVDs, anyway, this works quite well. :o)

Yeah, I'm on 2-disc instead, but it suits us really well for much the same reason: and catching up on old TV series too.

RE4 isn't too hard, though I admit the Dr. Salvador guys (the ones with chainsaws and sacks over their heads) are right bastards.

I've never understood the dislike for Kill Bill vol. 2, I love Tarantino's slow conversation based pieces and it does that really well.

I got to the village scene (pretty early on), and kept dying, and/or running out of ammo.

I think I know the bit you mean. The trick was to find a defendable point, and know when to cut your losses and run, and that bit was nothing compared to some of the later set pieces.

I'd never heard of the dislike for it :-)

Funnily enough we rented both of them recently too and I really enjoyed seeing them both again.

You couldn't cancel on the web when I reached the end of my free trial, which is why they got lots of money out of me for about 5 DVDs. I gave up trying to find time to watch a two hour film and now stick to TV series ;)
