I've been having annoying blepharospasm[1] for a day or two now, so thought I should look up causes, etc. online...

"The most common things that make the muscle in your eyelid twitch are fatigue, stress, and caffeine. "

Yeah, that sums up my life at the moment.

[1] is there any other sort?

I've been told it's from having too much salt: apparently the sodium or chloride ions (I forget which) are involved in transmitting motor neuron signals, and having too many of them can cause involuntary movements.

No idea if it's true or not.

Given that I get them and I eat very little salt, I'd be surprised. Unless there's an awful lot more salt in chocklit than anyone ever told me about.

I used to have occasional muscle twitches (though my eye wasn't one of the muscles which twitched) and was told the same thing, which at very least makes it something that biology teachers say even if it isn't true. I think it's sodium.

I had one in my inner ear once - staphedius muscle I believe. That was really really annoying, because I could actually hear the twitch.

Oh, I've had that occasionally! Is that what that is? Sort of a twitchy rumbly sound.

Yep. The muscle is connected to the facial nerve, hence it can develop a twitch. It feels like a twitchy eyelid inside your ear, and can generate a rumble or quite booming sound every time it twitches.

It's intensely annoying after a while.

Gosh, I never knew that was a real thing. (I mean, sometimes I have annoying eyelid twitches, but I didn't realise that it was a recognised phenomenon, with a name, which happened to other people.)

Oh, yes. And you know you've been working in healthcare too long when you don't have to look their silly names up.

I get that in the muscle(s) running across my left cheekbone occasionally. Never on the right though.

Wow. I always wondered whether there was a word for that. Drives me mad when I get it. It tickles!
