I've been told it's from having too much salt: apparently the sodium or chloride ions (I forget which) are involved in transmitting motor neuron signals, and having too many of them can cause involuntary movements.

No idea if it's true or not.

Given that I get them and I eat very little salt, I'd be surprised. Unless there's an awful lot more salt in chocklit than anyone ever told me about.

I used to have occasional muscle twitches (though my eye wasn't one of the muscles which twitched) and was told the same thing, which at very least makes it something that biology teachers say even if it isn't true. I think it's sodium.
