Today has been full of tasks relating to the impending shut-down of rapun, and the vanishing of my Cambridge email account. This is a bit depressing, so I'm going to try and be a bit more cheery by writing a little about some of the places I ate in America.

First up, is Ruth's Chris Steak House in Bellvue, WA (they have a fair few restaurants dotted round the US). We went there mostly to eat steak, but I felt some mushrooms stuffed with crabmeat would make a good starter (which they did). They steak itself was very tasty (if served on an alarmingly hot plate!), cooked just right and very tender. The veg that came with it were good, too. Somehow I managed to find room for the chocolate and espresso cake for pudding. There was an extensive wine list, and the local bottle we had was a good match for the steak. Not cheap, though, and probably not the place to go if you're a vegetarian.

Sticking with Washington State, I needed a meal at the airport, and plumped for the bizarrely-themed Bigfoot. They had a reasonable range of interesting-sounding beers (I went with Scuttlebutt IPA), and perfectly plausible food at a reasonable price.

On the way home, I ate dinner at Gallagher's Steak House at Newark Airport, which looked the best available option there. It ... wasn't bad, and scores a plus point for selling reasonable wine by the half-bottle.

I had one dinner at the "Bermuda" restaurant at the conference hotel. I'm afraid the aspect of that meal that sticks in my memory the most was that they brought the main course while I was still eating the starter! It sat there for a few minutes before my waiter noticed (someone else had brought it over), and took it away to put under a hot lamp until I was ready for it. I was unimpressed.

I had two very good meals in St Pete Beach. The first of these was at Snappers. They don't do reservations, so you have to turn up and wait for a table. It was worth it, though. The portabello mushroom stuffed with blue crab was very tasty, and the chipotle aioli gave it a bit of a kick. Then I had the wasabi-crusted tuna, which was excellent - cooked medium/rare, tender, with some interesting flavours. If I was going to be fussy, the wine by the glass was OK but not particularly good. Note also that the main courses are preceded by a salad that's included in the price.

The other was at the small Patrick's, which doesn't look like much from the outside. I had a gorgonzola and mushroom stuffed fillet, which was excellent, making an interesting twist on a good piece of meat. I followed it with the Marquise au Chocolat, which was also good (but perhaps could have managed a little more rum ;). The wine by the glass that I picked was the pleasingly-named "Zen of Zin", which was the best by-the-glass offering I had in America. I also had a glass of the Rosemount Old Benson, which is a tawny port-style wine; it was OK, but I don't think I'm going to be persuaded away from vinhos do Porto just yet ;-)

There's some reasonable grub to be had in the US, even in some of the chains.
