Oil

posted by [personal profile] emperor at 10:28am on 01/08/2011 under , ,
Anyone know a good way to get oil off a brick driveway? Our car isn't keeping the oil in as well as I'd like[0], and the mess needs clearing up. Assume for the moment that I don't have a pressure washer or a desire to spend £££ on the problem...

[0] yes, I'm trying to get that fixed...

How much oil are we talking about? I'd have thought any hot water and washing up liquid would shift a small spill.

Can of deagreaser, scubbing brush, hot water & detergent. Potentially a bottle of coke as well.

neat fairy liquid (not ecover!) and large handfuls of salt scrubbed in with broom then scrubbed off with v hot water. Don't put water on it until you've got a fair amount emulsified.

Then stick a flattened cardboard box under the car for further spills until you've got it sorted.

Neat washing up liquid is what we always suggested to people calling in with oil spills back when I worked for the AA.

Washing powder (& scrubbing with a hard brush as others suggested) worked OK for me in a similar situation. Add powder and a small amount of water, scrub, rinse, repeat.

Others have already suggested ways to clean the spill, which correspond with my guesses (though, given I've got it to hand, I'd also have been tempted to try Swarfega).

To state the obvious, perhaps you could put an old mug or similar under the leak to eliminate further problems?

Back in May I asked around to see if anyone had a pressure washer they could lend me. They couldn't, so I've bought one. Apart from the trifling problem of sixty intervening miles, you're welcome to borrow it. (-8

We've got a pressure washer which I'm sure you're welcome to borrow.
