I happened to read an article on some of these new gins that are all the rage these days, and I was struck by the variety of ways the reviewers thought the various gins should be combined with tonic - varying from 1:1 over crushed ice to long with pink grapefruit and cracked black pepper. So, how do you have your G&T, by preference?

[Poll #2021064]

For a bonus question, tell me what gin you think I should try...

As far as gins to try, I'd say Berkshire Mountain Distillers Ethereal Barreled gin. I have a bottle and you're welcome to try it!

As for how to drink it, it depends on the gin, the tonic and the garnish! Having spent a fun evening at the London Gin Club, I can recommend their suggestion of trying it neat over ice before adding some tonic and finally adding the appropriate garnish for the particular gin. It's interesting to see how the flavours develop.

Also, t-shirt!

I heard someone arguing recently that Beefeater is actually very good.

I also think it goes well with grapefruit :-)

Beefeater 24 is pretty good, although not outstanding.

Beefeater is actually very good - it all depends what you use ut for. Stain removal? Bathroom cleaner? Unwelcome guests?

Most gins I use lime as the garnish, but with Hendricks I'll use cucumber if we've got it. Sometimes I add a few drops of angostura bitters. Sometimes I'll add muddled strawberries and black pepper, although that's on it's way to being a cocktail rather than a G&T. Ophir is well worth a try.

Yes, Ophir was going to be the one I suggested.

I'd probably go for lemon rather than lime, actually.

And it occurs to me that I don't do this any more.

I purchased a fancy gin made from grapes. On average, i prefer gimlets over G&T, but this gin does not do well with lime. Also i use some foofoo small-batch tonic water i bought at Whole Foods.

Go a Tasmanian beauty: Lark distillery's pepperberry gin.

I'll bring some when I come visit ;-)

To get a really good Gin and Tonic one needs good tonic, Schweppes simply will not do.

We keep Fever Tree in the house these days.

that's one of the few that I can drink. Luckily the ones I can drink tend to be the nicer ones.

I usually drink whisky myself. I really only buy gin and tonic when my parents are due to make one of their infrequent visits.

Saffron gin. The heathery one is quite good too (checks booze cupboard) Caorunn. That suggests an apple garnish, which actually works well.

First rule for G&T: don't use crap tonic water, it degrades a good gin.

Recommendation: Fever Tree tonic water, or Fentiman's.

A small number of gins are smooth enough to drink neat, or over ice: start with Floraison, Gabriel Bouder saffron gin, or Sacred Gin.

My top recommendation is Sacred Gin - so called because the key botanic is frankincense - but Sacred also do a grapefruit and a cardamom gin (not quite as good, but still very drinkable).

Finally, there are two tricks for finding good gin:

1: Cultivate friends among the clergy;
2: The Ginvent Calendar.

Finnish gin is a thing now. :) They make two kinds of rye-based gin at Kyrö Distillery. I haven't had the chance to try any yet, but their Napue Gin was awarded in the G&T category at the 2015 International Wine & Spirit Competition.

Adnams is surprisingly good IMHO. I've been to several gin based events, but nothing is quite as useful as a quiet weekday in Gerry's on Old Compton Street, tasting warm neat gin and bitching about hipster distilleries.

To be clear "some ice" means 4 ice cubes. I'm using 50ml of gin with between 50 and 150ml of tonic depending on mood, weather and time of day.
