I haven't read any China Miéville (something I should rectify in my CFT), but I've heard good things about his books. So when I heard there was a TV adaptation of The City & The City, I thought that was worth looking at. It's a crime drama set in the twin cities of Besźel and Ul Qoma; the cities abut each other, but the citizens from each are taught not to even look into the other, never mind interact. It's a strange setting, to say the least! There's a lot going on about what we accept as a society, and how we see the other.

The TV adaptation, 4 1-hour episodes available on iPlayer is a decent bit of television - the setting is a bit confusing initially, but I found myself able to keep up with the oddness and not have it break my suspension of disbelief. The story itself is pretty compelling, and really drew me in. I'd recommend it, and will make more of an effort to read the book now :-)

I have read Mieville. He's a brilliant writer, but I find the work emotionally blank. There's no character to care about, so I've given up reading him.

I'm hoping that the adaptation is better.

Thank you! I love the book and have read it three times. (Though I'm aware that it's potentially problematic in its use of Eastern Europe for "flavour".) I hadn't realised that the adaptation would be out this soon and am very excited to see it.

The setting reminded me of Ampridatvir from The Dying Earth.
(We've seen the first ep only so far. I've not read the book.)
