I should have capitalised Critically Endangered too (that's usage taken from the IUCN)
As to painful animals; yes it is a veterinary idiom, but the OED seems to think it's a fair use of the word :)
I've incorporated most of the other changes (except for the ones that need l33t LaTeX skills, which I'll get some help with)...
