I saw this on [livejournal.com profile] rmc28's LJ, and am in the mood for procrastination...

Look at your LJ userpics list. If you have fewer than 50 icons, pick every fifth one. If you have between fifty and seventy-five icons, pick every seventh one. If you have over seventy-five icons, pick every tenth one. If you have fewer than ten, pick all of 'em. List them on your LJ, and tell everyone exactly why you have it, why it's interesting to you, what significance does it have.

default) default

This has been my LJ userpic for as long as I've had an LJ. It's from a medieval woodcut, and is a phoenix (despite what some people say). There has been at least one attempt to get me to change it, but to no avail. I even have it on my mobile phone these days...

1)

This is the crest of the University of Cambridge. I've spent nine years studying here now, and the prospect of leaving once I've finished my PhD is quite daunting. The University was founded in the 13th century and at its best manages to combine a rich historical tradition with cutting-edge research, with Colleges that look out for their students. It's rarely quite so perfect, however...

2)

I took this photograph myself, at Lausanne Cathedral; the original picture is here, of a man drinking with a skeleton. I use it for drinking-related entries and comments, although it suits goth things quite well too ;)

3)

This is actually a very large unicode character, the story of whose construction can be found here (along with a discussion of whether or not it's an ideogram!). It represents "phoenix", like my default userpic (which is why I chose this character), and I use it when writing e.g. entries for [livejournal.com profile] haiku_daily, which is something I'd like to get back to in my Copious Free Time (TM).

4)

Gin! I took this from someone else (with permission). It's a riff on the "Tea" userpic that did the rounds after the 7th July tube bombing. I'm working on my own version, but don't hold your breath...

I think I'd would have preferred to pick 5 userpics to talk about, rather than just "every fifth", but never mind, eh? If anyone wants to ask about other of my userpics, I'll gladly wibble about them ;-)

In unrelated news, I find myself hoping this gets laughed out of court.

I think we deal with this issue (speed cameras) in Aus by either saying who was driving or by default the owner of the vehicle gets the fines. Seems much more realistic. I guess as long as the car hasnt been stolen and the fine is just financial not legal/on record then it'd work.

It's not just fines here, with the ticket comes 3 penalty points on one's license. A total of twelve means automatic loss of license for a while (though they do "wear off" over time).

Eep! At home they are mainly revenue raisers and you dont lose points unless you get picked up by an actual cop (which I've been unfortunate enuff to do the 2 out of 3 times I've ever been done). Then you lose points and they do indeed wear off after 2 years. I'd be pretty pissed at a points system for all cameras. It'd be too easy to lose critical points. Okay so you shouldnt speed but it's hard to judge sometimes when you're doing multiple things and tired or have mind elsewhere and everyone gets them occasionally through no serious intent to speed.

Viz the speeding camera I'd say that if they won't state who was driving it must by default be the owner unless they can prove otherwise (and if they do that then let their insurers know in case they don't have multi-user insurance).

I hate the way drivers (and scarily the AA & RAC) keep selfishly having a go at speed cameras, and excusing it by making out that they're used to raise revenue. If you weren't speeding it would make no odds if the camera was there or not - and speeding is breaking a law. If you want the speed limits changed upwards launch a legal campaign.

As a driver I thoroughly agree with this. I get heartily sick of drivers who whinge about speed cameras. If you don't speed then you won't get caught speeding. It's quite simple really.

The big problem however, is that we are all brainwashed into the concept of going fast. The faster the better.

I now don't cruise on the motorway above 70 MPH (the default speed limit). It doesn't really take any longer to get there and it takes less petrol to do it. Seems like a win-win situation to me. :-)

The big problem with speed cameras is where it isn't obvious what the speed limit actually is. Urban roads have speed limits of either 30 MPH or 40 MPH. The limit signs aren't necessarily obvious (and sometimes are not even present!), also repeater signs aren't always installed. What I would like to see is the speed limit displayed above the speed camera. An additional benefit would be that no driver would have an excuse for going too fast.
