I've been enjoying the books by Stieg Larsson recently, so decided to see the film of the first book (titled in the Swedish Män som hatar kvinnor – "Men Who Hate Women", but titled the same as the film in the English translation) a couple of days ago. It would be hard to make a bad film of the book, which is a real page-turner with some fascinating characters and a twisty plot, but I was worried that the hero's character would be too Hollywoodized. Indeed the title sequence's Bond-movie aesthetic and the casting of Daniel Craig had me pretty worried to begin with. As it happens, though, I think the film is a pretty good telling of the first book's tale, and Lisbeth's character seemed reasonably intact. Having read the book, it's difficult for me to be sure, but I think someone who hadn't would be able to follow the plot reasonably well, although sometimes the various Vanger relative do get a bit confusing!

Like the original, there is a fair amount of violence in this film, some of it sexual.

There are two sets of films of the books, the American ones being slightly more recent. The Swedish version has dpkg in it :-)

You have to go to all the effort of setting up your serial killer database first though :-)

There was quite a lot of obviously right tech in the Swedish version, it wasn't just dpkg used as something computery to have on screen, it was right in context.

I think I was too busy going 'is that dpkg?' - what was it actually being used for?

Yeah, I'm aware of the Swedish version, but haven't seen it. Someone I know thought the Swedish version was no good.

The book is in my to-read list pile piles, so I can’t speak to how well any film may treat it, but I did enjoy the Swedish versions of the films.

The Swedish version of the first book is really really good (as a film; I haven't read the book so I dunno how faithful it is). In particular Michael Nyqvist is excellent. The second one is not as good but that could just be mid-trilogy syndrome. I haven't seen the third one yet.
